The Queen of Versailles

Director: Lauren Greenfield | US 2012 | 100 min

The Queen of Versailles

When Lauren Greenfield started her documentary about the eccentric billionaire family Segel, the family was in the process of constructing a Versailles-inspired huge villa of Citizen Kane dimensions - America's biggest house, in fact. The estate agent David and the former beauty queen Jackie live in an uninhibited version of the American dream filled with luxurious surroundings and a decadent lifestyle, until the financial crisis rears its ugly head and the housing bubble bursts with a loud bang. Will the Segel family really be forced to sell its unfinished dream house? 'The Queen of Versailles' is a sympathetic film that does not point any fingers, but which in an empathetic manner paints a nuanced portrait of its exotic 'larger than life' characters.
